How to get your API key

The $5.99 plan uses your own key, and your provider bills you for the AI. These are the same steps the desktop app shows if you have never made a key. Pick one provider. You only need one.

OpenAI

  1. Go to platform.openai.com and sign in. No account? Choose "Sign up" and confirm your email first. An OpenAI developer account is separate from ChatGPT Plus and from your TyporaAI subscription.
  2. Open Settings, then Billing, and add a payment method with a small amount of credit. OpenAI bills you directly for what you use. TyporaAI never charges for it.
  3. Go to Dashboard, then API keys, and select "Create new secret key". Name it "TyporaAI" so you can recognize it later.
  4. Copy the key the moment it appears. It starts with "sk-" and OpenAI will not show it to you again.
  5. Save it somewhere safe, like a password manager. Never email it, paste it into a chat, or put it in a shared document.
  6. Subscribe to the cheaper plan if you have not, download the desktop app, and paste the key on the API keys page. It stays on your computer.
  7. Optional but recommended: set a monthly spend limit under Settings, then Limits, before heavy use.

Claude

  1. Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in. No account? Choose "Sign up". The Claude Console is separate from a Claude.ai chat plan and from your TyporaAI subscription.
  2. Open Plans & Billing and buy a small amount of API credit. A Claude Pro chat plan does not cover API use.
  3. Open API keys and select "Create Key". Name it "TyporaAI".
  4. Copy the key right away. It starts with "sk-ant-" and is shown only once.
  5. Save it somewhere safe, like a password manager. Never email it, paste it into a chat, or put it in a shared document.
  6. Subscribe to the cheaper plan if you have not, download the desktop app, and paste the key on the API keys page. It stays on your computer.
  7. Optional but recommended: set a workspace spend limit before heavy use.

xAI

  1. Go to console.x.ai and sign in. No account? Create one at accounts.x.ai and confirm your email. It is separate from an X Premium subscription and from your TyporaAI subscription.
  2. Open Billing and add credit to the account. xAI bills you directly for what you use.
  3. Open API Keys and select "Create API key". Name it "TyporaAI" and give it access to the chat models.
  4. Copy the key right away. It starts with "xai-" and is shown only once.
  5. Save it somewhere safe, like a password manager. Never email it, paste it into a chat, or put it in a shared document.
  6. Subscribe to the cheaper plan if you have not, download the desktop app, and paste the key on the API keys page. It stays on your computer.
  7. Optional but recommended: check the pricing and rate-limit pages before heavy use.

Keep the key on your computer

TyporaAI keeps this key on your computer. It is only sent to the provider you picked. If a key is ever exposed, delete it in the provider console and create a new one.
